Teaching Compliments
From a very early age, you can teach your child how to give a compliment. Focus on something very specific about a person and start with, “I like the way you…” or, “You are very good at…” type phrases. It may seem a bit contrived initially, but stick with it!
Specific compliments about a person are always more meaningful than superficial compliments about appearance. “I like your shirt,” isn’t as meaningful as, “You’re very good at sharing.” Be a model for your child and compliment your adult friends, then talk about how good it feels to make other people feel special.
